Orientation/Get-together session!

24 09 2007

We went for our very first orientation/get-together session on saturday! It seemed quite weird, as we were already doing this project for quite some time and did a presentation on it for the rest of the team, yet we did not know any of the team members except for Ms Siti, Ms Ria, Ms Shufen and Ms Weiling. So for us, it was both an orientation and a get-together 😛

The presentations were very interesting and enriching, as we learnt more about what teamseagrass does apart from monitoring seagrasses as well as some of the team member’s own projects, such as Mr Kok Sheng’s Chek Jawa Mortality and Recruitment Project. We also got to know some of the team who presented, such as Mr Marcus, Mr Roy (heh xP) and Mr Andy.

Listening to their presentations also made us want to visit the other sites and not just Labrador Park! (Don’t tell Mr Lim, but we’re getting quite bored of Lab Park already…) Maybe it’s because we always take so long to do our monitoring, or because we’re always rushing off somwhere after monitoring sessions, but we seldom get the chance to explore the rest of Labrador Park apart from our patch of Thalassia. As such, we have not gotten the chance to spot any stonefish or sea snake, making our site seem really dull in comparison.

Nevertheless, we did learn something useful for our project from Mr Jeff Low. He spotted Thalassia at nearly 2m in depth at one of his dive surveys near labrador park! We are certainly curious as to how they can survive at such a depth. Perhaps the water quality was much better than that at Labrador Park, as our water tend to be quite turbid from the construction works nearby.

We are going to have our exams soon and thus will not be updating our blog much. We can’t wait for our exams to be over, because Mr Lim has promised that he will bring us to Chek Jawa! 😀
